The natural approaches that my grandparents left behind were with basil, honey, eucalyptus, steam, warm water and salt.
Take 4 cups of water with half cup of basil leaves and boil it until the liquid is reduced to 3 cups. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes and strain it. Drink half a cup of this liquid with pure honey to your taste, a few times during the day. Also, boil water in a tea kettle with a few drops of eucalyptus oil in it. When it starts to boil, lower the heat to medium. Inhale the steam coming out from the spout of the kettle. Steam with eucalyptus will help soothe throat, get rid of flu, cold and hoarse voice. Do this in the morning and before bedtime. In addition, she suggested gargling with warm salt water several times a day to speed up the healing process of hoarseness. These are wonderful home cures for laryngitis.
Eugenol, found in essential oil of basil, acts as an anti-inflammatory and restrains the growth of several types of bacteria. Eucalyptus oil, due to its great medicinal properties; it is often used as an inhalant or chest rub to ease breathing difficulties, help fight cold, flu and a number of respiratory disorders.
(Take safety measures during the steam process.)
